FORT COLLINS, Colo. - The Long Beach State women's golf team improved by six strokes in Tuesday's final round of the Ptarmigan Ram Fall Classic to finish in eighth place at 20-over-par. The 49ers carded a five-over 293 to finish with a 54-hole total of 884.

Colorado won the team championship with a one-under 287 winning by two shots over second-place California and seven shots over third-place Oregon.

Sophomore Simone Hoey was the top player for LBSU as she carded a 73 to finish at four-over tying for 22nd. Hoey started the final round with a bogey at the No. 6 hole. She would go on to par the next 11 holes before birding at the 18th. Hoey recorded one more bogey at the fourth hole as she finished the last remaining five holes on the front nine.

Senior Reina Rogers stormed back up the standings firing a 71 tying for 28th at six-over. Rogers recorded four birdies for the day with just three bogeys. In Monday's second round, Rogers' play on the front nine was marked by an eagle on the par-five at the second hole and two consecutive birdies at fourth and fifth holes.

Freshman Rochelle Chan continued her impressive performance in her first collegiate tournament closing out the day with a 74 to finish at seven-over tying for 30th. Chan's scorecard had two birdies and four bogeys for the round.

Junior Monica Villarreal was three-over for the day falling one spot in the standings to tie for 34th. Villarreal completed the tournament at eight-over.

Fellow classmate Noelle Zavaleta shot a 78 to tie for 43rd.

Kayla Mortellaro of Idaho held onto the lead with a nine-under to take the individual medalist honors. Mortellaro won by two strokes over Emily Talley of Colorado.

"We had a goal today of shooting 287 and we definitely came close shooting six-over," 49er head coach Joey Cerulle said. "Still, it was phenomenal as the first and third rounds were great. The second round we kept it together as we did much better this morning. The golf course was absolutely perfect. I'm extremely proud of Reina as she stepped up today. She was showing the senior leadership that I was looking for in her. We really had a great time bonding together as a team and I'm really excited about this year!"

The 49ers return to action on Saturday, Sept. 25, as they travel to East Lansing, Mich., for the Mary Fossum Invitational hosted by Michigan State.
