FRESNO, Calif. - Sophomore Nadia Link scored the game-winning goal in the 89th minute to lift the Long Beach State women's soccer team to its first win of the 2010 season as the 49ers topped Fresno State, 1-0, Monday evening at Bulldog Stadium.
The Beach (1-1-0) picked up its fourth consecutive shutout victory against Fresno State, improving to 6-1-0 in the all-time series.
Link connected for her first career goal, while junior Jazz Strozier was credited with the assist. Link also finished with a team-high three shots. Juniors Nicole Hubbard and Marysol Rosas added two attempts apiece. Junior Emily Kingsborough played all 90 minutes in between the posts, tallying four saves.
The two teams were locked in a scoreless tie until junior Shawna Gordon sent a corner kick into the box at the 88:59 mark, finding Strozier, whose shot was blocked. The ball ricocheted off a Bulldog defender to Link who put away the game-winner.
Fresno State (0-2-0) held a slight advantage in shot attempts, 14-10, while the 49ers won the battle in corner kicks, 6-3.
Long Beach State heads to College Station, Texas, this weekend for a pair of games against nationally ranked foes Washington State (Aug. 27) and Virginia Tech (Aug. 29) as part of the Aggieland Invitational Tournament, hosted by Texas A&M.
