Two goals in the final 20 minutes left the game even on the scoreboard.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Outshooting San Diego 11-3 in the second half, Long Beach State struck first as Cherrie Cox scored off of a rebound in the 72nd minute, but the Toreros found an answer minutes later and the game ended in a 1-1 draw.
In a cagy first half, Long Beach State (2-4-1) had the first dangerous chance, as a Logan Nidy shot banged off the bottom of the crossbar and down, but could not be conclusively ruled as a goal and the score remained 0-0, as Nidy's effort was one of few chances for either side in the first 45 minutes.
The action picked up in the second half as Long Beach State turned up the pressure. The Beach earned a dangerous free kick and Banks had a solid effort, forcing San Diego (2-0-4) goalkeeper Ilise Medrano into a leaping save. Banks would get another opportunity on goal minutes later, two of four shots for the junior forward sharing the team lead with Natelle El Mokbel.
El Mokbel came free in transition for a shot on target in the 62nd as Medrano made another of her six saves, but the Beach finally broke through in the 71st minute. Jordan Candelaria lofted a shot that hit off the crossbar and Cherrie Cox was again in a dangerous position, scoring the rebound as the Beach took a 1-0 lead on the junior's third goal of the year.
San Diego was able to keep their unbeaten streak alive however with a goal against the run of play in the next few minutes. A giveaway in the defensive third allowed Amanda Anders in behind, and while her shot hit the post, the rebound landed for Josefine Schlichting, who scored the equalizer to even the score 1-1.
Long Beach State remains at home and will finish their non-conference schedule on Sunday, hosting NM State at George Allen Field. Kickoff is set for Noon as the Beach will recognize their departing seniors Amanda Perez and Logan Nidy prior to the game, which will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
