LAKEWOOD, Calif. - Junior pitcher Brooke Turner had a season-high 13 strikeouts and freshman Nalani St. Germain homered to lift the 49ers to a 1-0 win over Idaho State at the Long Beach State Invitational Sunday afternoon.
Turner now holds the top three spots in school history for strikeouts in a game. She set the 49er record with 16 in a 10-inning win over Florida and had 15 at San Diego in 2008. Turner's 13 punchouts against the Bengals also ties her for third on the all-time list.
Turner picked up her first shutout of the season, allowing just five hits in seven innings. The Beach finished with three hits as St. Germain accounted for the game-winner with a solo homerun, while juniors Jodi Nakawatase and Liz Javier also made their way into the hit column.
LBSU had a chance to get on the board in the bottom of the fifth when Nakawatase ended Idaho State pitcher Kandis Clesson's bid at a no-hitter with a leadoff double. Freshman Bree Stephan entered the game as a pinch-runner and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Jennifer Madigan. Bridgette Pagano then hit a soft grounder to third base and Stephan was thrown out at home on the fielder's choice.
St. Germain then gave The Beach the 1-0 lead in the sixth, opening the inning with a shot over the fence in left center. It was St. Germain's team-leading eighth home run.
The 49ers close out the Long Beach State Invitational later today when they take on San Diego at 3:45 p.m. at Mayfair Park.
