LONG BEACH, Calif. - T.J. Robinson, Stephan Gilling and Casper Ware combined for 39 points to lead Long Beach State to a 65-51 Big West Conference win over Cal State Northridge on Saturday at the Walter Pyramid.
Robinson led The Beach (11-12, 5-5 Big West) with 15 points and a game-high eight rebounds. Gilling added 14 points snapping out of a shooting slump that started in the conference opener at UC Riverside on January 2.
Gilling canned 4-of-10 shots from three and 5-of-11 shots from the floor. In the49ers first nine conference games, the senior guard had struggled making just 10-of-51 (19.6 percent) shots from 3-point range and 16-of-75 (21.3 percent) of his total field goals.
"I've been waiting for this game for 10 games now," Gilling said. "It feels good to hit at least two threes and it really built my confidence back. I'm glad (the shooting slump) happened in the middle of the season and I feel like it's the right time to bring it all back."
Ware added 10 points, four assists and two steals for the 49ers who made 21-of-57 (41.2 percent) of their field goal attempts while holding the Matadors (9-14, 4-6 Big West) to just 2-of-14 (14.3 percent) shooting from 3-point range.
The Beach jumped out to an early lead and never trailed Cal State Northridge. LBSU built the lead to as many as 11 in the first half before going into the break with a 33-26 lead. Gilling paced the 49ers in the first half scoring 11 of his points on 4-of-6 shooting, including 3-of-5 from 3-point range.
The 49ers extend the lead to 15 in the first six minutes of the second half going on a 10-2 run to start the half. CSUN could never get closer than 11 points as Long Beach finished off its first season-sweep of the Matadors since the 2005-06 season.
