Berkeley, Calif. - The No. 8 Long Beach State men's water polo team lost to No. 1 California 14-7 in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation conference match-up on Sunday at Spieker Aquatics Complex in Berkeley, Calif.

Taylor Clute led the 49ers (7-12, 0-6) in scoring with three goals, followed by Carter Taylor with two scores. Dan Matulis and Alexsandr Petrovic added one goal each. Goalie Matt Kubeck finished with nine saves. Ivan Rackov led the Golden Bears (17-2, 5-0) with a game-high four goals.

Clute got the 49ers on the board when he scored to tie the game a 1-1. After Cal went up 3-1 on two quick scores, Matulis and Petrovic brought the game even at 3-3. The Bears jumped up by two goals once more in the first period, but a breakaway goal by Clute right before the end of the period cut the lead to 5-4.

A second quarter goal by Clute made the score 8-5 at the time, but Cal finished the period off with two more scores to go into halftime leading 10-5.

The Beach scored their lone goal of the third period at the very end when Taylor tipped in a Nick Rascon pass with one second on the clock. Taylor accounted for the only Long Beach State score in the fourth period as well.

Long Beach State returns to action on Thursday, November 11 at 7 p.m. at 49er Pool.
