The Beach loses to LMU in overtime

Long Beach, Calif. - The No. 9 Long Beach State men's water polo team lost 11-9 in overtime to No. 8 Loyola Marymount at 49er Pool on Thursday.
Six 49ers (7-13, 0-6) scored in the non-conference match with the Lions (16-8, 13-1 in the Western Water Polo Association). Taylor Clute led The Beach with three goals while Nick Rascon added two more goals to his team-leading 35 on the year. Alexsandr Petrovic, Shane Luth, Patrick van der Linde and Dan Matulis also scored one goal apiece.
Long Beach State jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period with goals by Clute and Luth before the Lions rallied with four-straight goals to claim a 4-2 lead in the second period. Rascon answered back with his first goal of the night to cut the lead to one with 3:36 left to play in the second frame. Neither team scored after that and LMU took a 4-3 lead into halftime.
Petrovic tied the game at 4-4 less than a minute into the third period after The Beach denied the Lions on two powerplay attempts. Matulis tossed in a goal with less than three minutes to go in the third quarter to put LBSU back on top before LMU's John Mikuzis scored to tie the game at 5-5.
The 49ers went up by a goal three more times in the fourth, but the Lions answered back each time before going up 9-8 on a goal by Ikaika Aki with 2:04 left to play. Later in the period, Rascon found the back of the cage with only 23 seconds left to on the clock to send the game into overtime tied 9-9.
In overtime, LMU's Aki tossed in two goals to secure an 11-9 victory for the Lions. With the win, LMU split the season series with The Beach.
The 49ers get back into action at 12 p.m. on Saturday when they host No. 2 USC at 49er Pool in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation conference match-up.
