Stanford, Calif. - Nick Rascon led the No. 8 Long Beach State men's water polo team with a hat trick in an 11-6 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation conference loss to No. 4 Stanford on Saturday at Avery Aquatic Center in Stanford, Calif. The 49ers (7-11, 0-5) are still searching for their first conference win while the Cardinal's (11-5, 4-1) picked up their fourth conference victory of the season.

Rascon scored a team-high three goals for The Beach while Alexsandr Petrovic, Shane Luth and Barry Snyder each chipped in with a goal apiece. Goalie Matt Kubeck finished with 10 saves.

Petrovic put Long Beach State on top 1-0 early in the first period on a five-meter penalty shot, but Stanford answered right back with two scores to take a 2-1 lead. Luth came back and tied the game at 2-2, but Stanford ended the first period with a 4-2 lead.

Early in the second period, Stanford's Jacob Smith scored on a five-meter penalty shot to put the Cardinal on top 5-2, then Rascon brought The Beach to within two goals with his first score of the day. Two quick goals by Stanford stretched the lead to 7-3 before Rascon cut the lead to 7-4 with his second goal of the game. Rascon's goal with 3:27 left to play in the first half was the last by either team.

Stanford stretched its lead to 9-4 when Smith and Jeffrey Schwimer scored the only two goals of the third period.

Rascon scored his third goal of the game after taking a pass from Rob Robinson that brought the 49ers to within four goals at 9-5, but Stanford came back again with two scores to push the lead to 11-5. Barry Snyder got The Beach back to 11-6 with his 14th goal of the year, but Stanford would hold on for the 11-6 win.

Long Beach State gets back in action against No. 1 Cal at 12 p.m. on Sunday at the Spieker Aquatics Complex in Berkeley, Calif.
