San Diego, Calif. - The No. 8 Long Beach State men's water polo team edged No. 9 UC San Diego, 6-5, in a non-conference game Friday. The 49ers (7-6) opened up a three-goal lead over the Tritons (9-7) when freshman Nick Rascon scored the eventual game-winning goal with 7:06 left to play in the fourth period.

Sophomore goalie Matt Kubeck played an amazing game in the cage and finished with 13 saves. Sophomore Carter Taylor led The Beach with a team-high two goals, while juniors Matt Farrington and Alexsandr Petrovic found the back of the cage once each and senior Patrick van der Linde chipped in with a goal. Rascon extended his scoring streak to 13 games with his fourth quarter score.

Long Beach State got on the board first on a van der Linde score. Later in the first period, UCSD tied the game at, 1-1, on a goal by Ryan Allred.

Farrington put the 49ers back on top early in the second period before UC San Diego's Brian Donohoe scored a goal to notch things up at, 2-2. LBSU's Taylor closed out the first half scoring to give the 49ers a, 3-2, lead.

Taylor stretched the LBSU lead to, 4-2, early in the third with his second goal of the game. UCSD's John Butler cut the lead to one when he scored with 1:58 to go in the period.

Petrovic got The Beach back on top by two goals when he scored 29 seconds into the fourth period, then Rascon found the back of the net with the eventual game-winner 25 seconds later. The Tritons added two more goals to make the final, 6-5.

The 49ers play next when they host UC Irvine in their MPSF conference opener at noon, Saturday, October 16 at 49er pool. Admission is free.
