LONG BEACH - The Long Beach State women's soccer team extended its unbeaten streak to five games as it upended Big West Conference preseason favorite UC Santa Barbara, 3-1, Sunday afternoon at George Allen Field.

The 49ers improved to 8-3-2 overall and 1-0-1 in Big West action, while the Gauchos dropped to 5-5-2, 1-1-0 BWC.

Junior Shawna Gordon led The Beach with a goal and an assist, while sophomore Nadia Link and senior Lindsay Bullock also found the back of the net. Junior Emily Kingsborough played the entire game in between the posts, turning away three UCSB shots.

LBSU struck early as Link recorded the quickest goal in program history, notching her team-leading seventh of the season just 1:30 into the game. Gordon sent a lead pass up the field and over the Gauchos' back line where Link was able to beat the goalkeeper with a shot to the far post.

UC Santa Barbara then responded at the 6:10 mark when a misclear by the 49er defense left Kailyn Kugler with the ball in the middle of the box where she delivered it to the upper right netting.

The Beach refused to settle, however, as Gordon scored what ended up being the game-winning goal in the 23rd minute. After a handball was called in the box, Gordon's penalty kick was blocked by UCSB goalie Makenna Henry, but Gordon was right there for the rebound, drilling the ball to the lower right corner.

LBSU held its 2-1 lead for the remainder of the half before coming out of the break in attack mode. The 49ers played most of the second period on the offensive end, out shooting the Gauchos, 9-5. The Beach eventually tacked on one more at the 59:06 mark when Bullock headed in her second goal of the year on a corner kick from senior Karina Camacho.

Long Beach State won the battle in shots (15-to-10) and corner kicks (6-to-3). Bullock led the 49ers with five attempts, three of which were on target, while Gordon finished with three shots.

The Beach continues Big West action on the road as it heads to UC Riverside for a 7 p.m. showdown on Friday, Oct. 8.
