Los Angeles, Calif. - T.J. Robinson set a career-high with 18 rebounds and a game-high 22 points, but his seventh double-double of the year was not enough as the 49ers fell to Loyola Marymount 85-80 in overtime on the road at Gersten Pavilion.
Eugene Phelps finished with a career-high 14 points, and Casper Ware and Larry Anderson each finished with 16 points to lead the 49er offense. LMU also had four players score in double-figures, led by Drew Vinay with 18.
With a 19-17 lead in the first half, Long Beach State gave up a 11-2 run over five minutes late in the first half to give LMU a seven point cushion, which the Lions carried into the break as a 39-31 lead.
Down eight points at halftime, Long Beach State took a 72-69 lead on a jumper from Anderson with 36 seconds remaining in regulation, but Lions guard Larry Davis tied the game with a 3-pointer with 15 seconds remaining to send the game into overtime.
The overtime featured strong defense from both teams, but LMU took an 80-78 lead with 1:18 remaining following a layup from Vernon Teel. A pair of missed 49er free throws sent possession back to the Lions, and Loyola Marymount hit five free throws down the stretch to hold onto the lead and get the win.
Long Beach State rallied from a 41-33 halftime deficit with a 12-2 run to start the second frame as Ware poured in eight of his 16 points in the first 4:23 of the second half to take a 45-43 lead.
