LONG BEACH-- Shannon Hughes converted a penalty kick at 76:44 to give UNLV (4-1-1) a 1-0 victory over host Long Beach State (3-1-1), despite the 49ers taking 12 corner kicks in the match and outshooting the Rebels 17-to-6.
The winning score was set up when the referee whistled the ball dead after Haley Partridge was knocked down deep inside the box on the left side. Hughes then converted the corner to give UNLV the advantage with less than 14 minutes to go. The 49ers though made three attempts to tie the contest up, as a Hayley Bolt header went high in the 85th minute and two Kim Silos' shots in the 87th minute and with 1:27 remaining, both went wide left of the goal.
LBSU had numerous opportunities throughout the contest to take the lead, as goalkeeper Alicia Lugo made three saves, including stoppers in the 10th minute on a Kristen Kiefer shot, in the 31st minute on a Sahar Haghdan attempt and in the 56th minute on a Bolt attempt.
UNLV had a chance early in the second half to take the lead, but Breanna Truelove stopped a point blank shot by Ashleigh Shoughro in the 48th minute, after UNLV managed just two first half attempts. LBSU had eight corner kicks in the first half and outshot the Rebels 8-to-2 over the first 45 minutes.
The 49ers are next in action when they host BYU on Thursday, September 11 at 4:30 p.m. and Oregon next Sunday.
