LONG BEACH-- Lindsay Bullock had a goal and an assist, Dana Farquhar added two assists and Long Beach State (4-1-1) avenged last season's 1-0 loss in Provo with a 3-0 victory over Brigham Young University (3-4-0) on Thursday afternoon.
The defense paced by senior Tiffany Vaught, who also added an assist, allowed just three shots, as the 49ers out shot the Cougars 14-to-3.
The 49ers opened up the scoring in the 27th minute as Vaught sent a pass from midfield to Bullock, who headed it towards Kristen Kiefer, who kicked it in at 26:40 to make it 1-0. LBSU out shot BYU 8-to-1 in the the first half, as Bullock took the first of two assists from Farquhar at 63:42 and headed it in to make it 2-0.
Freshman Shawna Gordon then headed in the final goal of the contest at 85:44, taking a pass from the right wing and Farquhar to make it 3-0.
BYU nearly tied it with two minutes left in the half as following a restart, Liz Ramos punched the ball out to keep the 49ers fourth shutout intact. Ramos then made her only save on a Alyssa Vander Veur shot in the 75th minute, with LBSU up 2-0, continuing her school record streak of 30.5 shutouts in her four-year career.
The 49ers host Oregon on Sunday at George Allen Field at noon, after the Ducks play UC Riverside in Long Beach on Friday starting at 3 p.m.
