DAVIS-- Long Beach State assistant coach and Naismith Hall of Famer Denise Curry is one of the initial inductees to the Davis Senior High School Hall of Fame. The induction ceremony will occur on the campus of UC Davis on October 4.
Curry, who is currently in her sixth year as an assistant coach with the 49ers, played on 10 varsity teams at DHS, winning 10 league championships. In 1977, after scoring 1798 points and averaging 24.97 points per game, she made Parade Magazine's first All-America team. Her high school jersey was retired that same season, as she went on to become of the greatest players in UCLA history.
Her 3198 points and 1310 rebounds are still Bruin records, as she set 23 scoring records in her career. Curry was the first in a group of four Bruins to have their numbers retired, joining former teammate Ann Meyers, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Bill Walton, on the 25th anniversary of Pauley Pavilion in February of 1990. The three-time Western Collegiate Athletic Conference MVP was inducted into the UCLA Hall of Fame in 1994. Curry also was a member of the 1978 National Championship UCLA softball team and was a Academic All-American in 1981.
Curry was a member of the U.S. National Team from 1977 to 1984, where she played on the 1984 Gold Medal basketball team. She went onto playing professionally in Europe from 1982 to 1990, winning five national championships in eight years.
Curry became one of only 10 female players inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, when she was enshrined in 1997. Curry was in the inaugural class of inductees to the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame in 1999.
