Long Beach, Calif. - Head Coach Mary Hegarty has announced the final addition to her staff, having named Michelle Erickson as the team's Director of Operations. She joins Jackie Zink as a new member of the coaching staff for the 2008-09 season.
Erickson comes to the 49ers from Mater Dei High School, where she spent the last two years as the Junior Varsity Head Coach and an assistant with the varsity. Last season, she led her squad to a 26-9 overall record. She has also previously worked as an assistant coach at Mission Prep High School in San Luis Obispo and as a basketball camp instructor across the country.
In college, Erickson nee Henke played for Cal Poly, where she served as the team captain while starting at guard. Named the Big West Player of the Week after scoring 21 points against rival UC Santa Barbara, Erickson also ranks in the school's top 10 in rebounding despite standing only 5'9".
"Michelle was an outstanding student-athlete at Cal Poly, and she knows what it takes to be a great student-athlete in the conference," said Hegarty. "As a player, she was a tremendous leader, she worked hard and had a great attitude. I expect those qualities will carry over and will make her a tremendous addition to our staff."
The 49ers begin the 2008-09 season on Monday, November 3 with an early exhibition against the traveling club team Love & Basketball. Following that game, the team officially starts the season with a home game against San Diego State on Sunday, Nov. 16 at 2 p.m.
