LONG BEACH--Long Beach State (1-0-0) opened up their season with four goals off corner kicks to come away with a 4-0 win over visiting Gonzaga (0-1-0) on Friday afternoon. The 49ers outshot the Bulldogs 22-to-2 in the contest.
Sophomore Kristen Kiefer scored her first two goals of the season, putting the 49ers on the board in the 22nd minute after Bo Rael received the corner and gave it to Hayley Bolt, who passed it to Kiefer and headed it in. Bolt again received the assist with 34 seconds remaining in the first half, as off another corner, her header was blocked, and Kiefer followed by kicking it in to make it 2-0.
Bolt finished with a goal and two assists.
LBSU made it 3-0 when freshman Nicole Hubbard headed a corner kick from Kim Silos in the 55th minute. Bolt finished off the scoring, heading in Mariko Strickland's corner kick in the 77th minute to make it 4-0.
LBSU sophomore Nikki Myers left the game with 13 minutes remaining, suffering a left knee injury. She is day to day and will receive x-rays to determine her status.
The 49ers are next in action when the travel to Hawaii for two contests next week, at Hawaii on August 27 and against Denver on August 30 (dates confirmed).
