Long Beach, Calif. - Head Coach Mary Hegarty announced that Jackie Zink has been hired to fill a vacant spot on the women's basketball staff. Zink joins the staff after spending last year with Stanford University.
Zink spent last season under Hall of Fame Coach Tara VanDerveer at Stanford with the women's program, as the Cardinal advanced to the national championship game before falling to Tennessee. Zink also spent time at San Francisco, working for one year with the Dons.
"We're thrilled to welcome Jackie to the 49er basketball family," said Hegarty. "She brings a wide variety of experience, having worked from the high school level to Division I. Spending last year on the bench as part of the Stanford program that played for the national championship was a unique opportunity, as was working with Tara VanDerveer, one of the finest women's basketball coaches in the country. Her eagerness and enthusiasm to be a part of our program will add new energy and help us achieve our goals."
Prior to moving to the collegiate ranks, Zink spent four years as a head coach at two positions at the high school level, leading the girl's programs at The Branson School and the Urban School. During that time, she earned a Bay County League Championship, and was a North Coast Section Semifinalist.
"I'm very excited about the opportunity to join Mary and her staff," said Zink. "I'm ready to do my part for Long Beach State basketball, and help them reach the goals that Mary has set for the program."
Zink played for two years for Cuesta Community College before transferring to Sonoma State, where she made two trips to the Division II NCAA Tournament, and earned a share of the 1997-98 California Collegiate Athletic Association championship. Zink will replace Jason Flowers, who accepted a similar position at UC Riverside.
