Long Beach, Calif. - Forward Tipesa Moorer (Harbor City, Calif.) and guard Sahfiya Brown (Fontana, Calif.) have both inked their intention to play for Long Beach State in the upcoming season. The pair joins Adele Walton as a part of the recruiting class for next season.
"Both players will bring good athleticism along with a strong work ethic that will help them contribute immediately," said head coach Mary Hegarty.
An LA Times first-team all-city selection as a senior, Moorer averaged 10.3 points per game for a very good Narbonne High School team that went 31-5 overall and won the Marine League and City titles. With her choice of Long Beach State, Moorer becomes the fifth player from Narbonne to take a Division I scholarship.
A balanced guard/forward, Moorer also averaged 5.4 rebounds per game and led her team with 30 blocks on the year, averaging nearly one per game.
"Tipesa comes from a very successful program," said Hegarty. "She plays hard, defends well, and is a good rebounder. She's also a tremendous student, who takes care of her responsibilities in the classroom."
Brown, also a combo guard/forward, was a starter for the California JC Champion Mt. SAC Mounties, earning first-team All-South Coast Conference North Division honors in 2007-08. Starting at guard, Brown averaged 8.7 points per game while bringing in 6.8 rebounds per game, second-most on the championship squad.
"Sahfiya was a key player on two Mt. SAC championship teams," said Hegarty. "She's a winner, and she knows what it takes to be successful."
"We're thrilled to sign these two athletes in the late signing period. I believe that they will fit right in with our 49er family."
