TUCSON, Ariz.--Long Beach State's Andrew Liebel and Shane Peterson were each named All-Americans by Collegiate Baseball for the first time in their careers, as the Dirtbag righthander, Liebel, was named to the second team and Peterson, was named to the third team.
Liebel leads the Big West in ERA entering his Friday night start against Fresno State at 6 p.m. at the NCAA Regional at Blair Field. He was named the Big West tri-Pitcher of the Year on Wednesday.
Liebel is the 14th LBSU pitcher since 1989 to be named an All-American, joining: Cesar Ramos (2005), Jered Weaver (2003-04), Abe Alvarez (2002-03), Mike Gallo (1999), Ara Petrosian (1997), Marcus Jones (1996-97), Ryan Brannan (1996), Gabe Gonzalez (1994-95), Scott Rivette (1994-95), Daniel Choi (1993), Steve Whitaker (1991), Steve Trachsel (1991) and Kyle Abbott (1989).
Peterson, who leads the Big West in batting (.399), on-base percentage and walks, and is second in slugging is also amongst Big West leaders in six other offensive categories. He was named the Big West's co-Player of the Year.
Peterson is just the second Dirtbag first baseman to be named All-American, joining Don Barbara, who won the honor in 1990.
