LONG BEACH--Throwing a complete game in two hours and 12 minutes will get you noticed. Long Beach State right hander Andrew Liebel (Pomona) was named the Pro-Line Athletic National Pitcher of the Week by the National Collegiate Baseball Writer's Association, following a complete game five-hit shutout over UC Santa Barbara last week.
Liebel, who enters his Friday night start at Cal Poly at 7-2 with a conference-leading 1.69 ERA, was earlier this week named the Big West's Pitcher of the Week after pitching to just three over minimum against the second-best offense and adding to his consecutive scoreless innings streak, currently at 20.1 innings.
It was his second career shutout and second in a row, as he pitched a six-hit shutout at UC Davis two weeks ago. Liebel opened the season by being named the Big West's Pitcher of the Week following a win over Rice's Ryan Berry, the reigning National Freshman of the Year.
In six Big West starts, he has a 1.69 ERA and 5-1 record, with three complete games and two shutouts.
Liebel also leads the Big West in innings pitched (95.2) and is second in strikeouts (84), as the senior has walked just 15 on the season.
Liebel has pitched into the seventh in all 18 of his career starts, after 54 career relief appearances.
