Freitas Named Track Athlete Of The Week

Long Beach, Calif. - Sophomore Alex Freitas was named the Big West Men's Track Athlete of the Week for the week ending April 9. The Beach has now had at least one honoree from the conference during the last three weeks.
Freitas, a sophomore out of Ceres, Calif., participated in three events for Long Beach State during the weekend. In his strongest event, Freitas again posted a regional qualifying time of 1:49.39 to take fifth place overall in the event.
Also running in the 1500, Freitas finished in 3:51.62, earning a PR in the event. Rounding out his competition on the farm, Freitas ran the second leg of the 4x400 relay, an event where the 49ers finished second with a time of 3:11.97 and were the top collegiate finishers at the meet.
With a season-best of 1:49.34, Frietas is ranked sixth nationally and is second in the West Region in the 800. His time also stands as the fifth-best in Long Beach State history.
With the award, Freitas joins Brent Gray as the second winner of the men's track award for Long Beach State this season. Other weekly winners on the year include Jessica Branker, Rob Jennings and Alex Shaw.
