Santa Clara, Calif. - Long Beach State (1-3) committed 25 turnovers and dropped a 70-55 decision at Santa Clara (4-2) on Sunday afternoon. Ally Wade had 15 points and seven rebounds for the 49ers, who shot 42 percent for the contest, while Jen Gottschalk had a game-high 26 points on 11-of-14 shooting. SCU shot 44 percent and committed just 15 turnovers, including just five in the first half.
The 49ers made a late run to cut the deficit to single digits, going on a 15-5 run to close to within nine, but the Broncos countered with an 11-5 run to finish the contest.
After an Elizabeth Doran three-pointer at 7:40 gave SCU a 54-35 lead, Wade's two free throws made it 59-50 with 3:19 left. But a Tracey Walker three-pointer followed by a three-point play made it 65-50 with 2:36 left en route to the ending run.
The 49ers committed 14 first half turnovers and trailed 34-21 at the half, out shooting the Broncos 40 to 37 percent. SCU though committed just five first half turnovers and were led by 15 points by Gottschalk.
Figueroa countered with 11 first half points for the 49ers. Kaiti O'Brien and Courtney Jacob both played limited minutes in the half after picking up two fouls.
A Majors three-pointer with 7:03 left in the half matched the Broncos largest lead to that point, at 22-10. A Elizabeth Doran three-pointer with 3:26 left then made it 29-16 as SCU remained in front for the entire half.
Santa Clara hit four of their first five field goals and led 11-2 with 17:01 remaining to start the contest, as a Chandice Cronk layup off a steal led Santa Clara to a 17-7 lead with 11:18 left.
Valeriya Musina, the team's leading scorer prior to Friday's contest, missed Sunday's game with an elbow injury suffered on Friday at San Jose State. She is day-to-day.
The 49ers travel to Oregon for a contest next Friday at 7 p.m. to start a two-game swing through the Pacific Northwest.
