BERKELEY, Calif. - Number two-ranked California scored six goals in the third quarter lifting the Golden Bears to a 10-5 win on Saturday afternoon at the Spieker Aquatics Complex. Cal improves to 19-2 on the season and 4-0 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation. The 49ers, who play at Pacific on Sunday, fell to 14-9 and 1-3 in league play.
The 49ers led 2-1 at the half after second quarter goals from Jake Kinne (7:16) and Reid Tomassi (2:57). But the Golden Bears responded with six goals in the third period, compared to just one for the 49ers to take a 7-3 lead after three quarters. Jeff Tyrell scored three goals for Cal and Michael Sharf added two.
Ash Blythen, Sean Greiner and Kevin Mundia tallied the other 49er goals. 49er goalie Steve MacKenzie had 11 goalie saves.
Long Beach continues play in Northern California as they play at Pacific on Sunday at 12 pm.<>
