49ers Win Two At Mini Tournament

LONG BEACH, Calif. - Long Beach State senior Clint Wilson scored with two seconds left in the second overtime period to lift the 49er men's water polo team to a 9-8 win over visiting UC Santa Barbara on Saturday afternoon at the Long Beach Mini Tournament. In the morning game the 49ers defeated Long Beach City College, 12-1, in a exhibition game at the Campus Pool.

The seventh-ranked 49ers (7-2 overall) trailed throughout most of the contest. UCSB (10-6) held a 4-2 lead at the half and led 6-4 after three quarters. The 49ers rallied for three third quarters goals to send the game into overtime. Senior Travis Buchanan scored his lone goal of the day with 41 seconds left in regulation to tie the game at 7-7.

After a scoreless first overtime period, UCSB went up 8-7 as Ross Sinclair scored his second goal of the day at 2:07. Long Beach tied the game with one minute left as Jake Kinne tallied his second goal of the day. After stopping the Gauchos on defense, the 49ers won the game in the next to last second as Wilson scored with just two seconds left on the clock. Besides Kinne and Wilson tallying two goals apiece, sophomore Justin Koeppen also added two goals for The Beach.

Both goalies had strong outings as the 49ers Steve MacKenzie recorded 11 saves while his UCSB counterpart Michael Robinson had 12. Sinclair and Milos Golic both tallied two goals for UCSB.

In its morning contest against Long Beach City College the 49ers held the Vikings scoreless for three quarters as MacKenzie recorded 10 saves.Three Forty-Niners led the team in goals as senior Nick Korsgaden and sophomores Jeff Greenwood and Eric Benson each had two goals a piece. Also scoring for LBSU in Saturday's opener were Reid Tomassi, Sean Greiner, Robert Miranda, Kevin Van Haaster, Mike Del Grande and Eric Steele. Brian Mattingly had the lone goal for LBCC in the fourth quarter.

The 49ers will next be in action on Thursday, September 27 when they host UC Irvine at 7 pm at the 49er Campus Pool.
