
49ers Fall In Overtime To UCLA

BERKELEY, Calif. - In a consolation contest at the MPSF Tournament, UCLA out-scored Long Beach State 5-to-1 in overtime to come away with a 13-9 win on Saturday afternoon at the Speiker Aquatics Complex. The fourth-ranked Bruins improved to 20-7 while the eighth-ranked 49ers fell to 17-14.
UCLA's Krsto Sbutega scored four goals, including two in overtime, to lead the Bruin offensive attack. Ash Blythen and Reid Tomassi each scored twice for the 49ers. UCLA received two goals apiece from Scott Davidson, Justin Johnson and Marco Santos.
With the game tied a 2-2 at the half, Long Beach put up five goals in the third quarter to take a 7-6 advantage. After UCLA tied the game mid-way through the fourth quarter, Tomassi scored his second goal of the day at 2:51 giving Long Beach an 8-7 lead. The Bruins came right back, scoring on their next possession, as Johnson scored at 2:31 to tie the contest at 8-8 and send it to overtime. UCLA scored three goals in the first overtime period to establish an 11-9 lead and then closed out the game with two more tallies in the second OT.
In goal, UCLA's Shay Lapin recorded 14 goalie saves while the 49ers Steve MacKenzie had six.
Long Beach will play in the 7th place game on Sunday at 11 am against Pepperdine.
