Women's Track Team Earns Academic Honor

NEW ORLEANS, LA - The Long Beach State women's track and field team was named a 2007 USTFCCCA (U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association) Division I All-Academic Team. The 49ers were one of just two Big West Conference teams to receive the honor. Also, on the men's side, Ezra Kwong and Jimmy Grabow were named to the 2007 USTFCCCA Division I Men's All-Academic Track and Field Team.
Heading the women's team honors were the University of Arkansas Little Rock, ,which had the highest overall GPA (3.610), while Quinnipiac University (3.518) and the University of Tennessee Chattanooga (3.460) rounded out the top three All-Academic teams. In all, there were 97 Division I Women's programs recognized as 2007 All-Academic Track and Field Teams. The Big Ten Conference led all conferences with a total of eight All-Academic teams. The selection of the All-Academic Indoor and Outdoor Team's of the Year award is based on a combination of athletic and academic achievements. The top honor goes to the team that has the best finish at the Division I Indoor and/or Outdoor National Championships and that also holding the highest cumulative GPA. To be nominated, the team must carry a minimum 3.000 GPA.
On the men's side, McNeese State University's Bradley Gebauer and University of Mississippi's Barnabas Kirui were respectively named the 2007 USTFCCCA Division I Indoor and Outdoor Scholar Athlete's of the Year. 233 student-athletes from 88 colleges and universities comprised the Division I Men's All-Academic Team. Brigham Young University and Stanford University led all schools with 11 student-athletes on the list. The USTFCCCA honors Division I individuals for their academic and athletic achievements during the indoor and outdoor track season. To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team, one must have a cumulative grade-point average of 3.25 and obtain an NCAA automatic or provisional qualifying mark for the most recent indoor championships or an outdoor regional qualifying mark in their respective event.
