Home Wrapup
Long Beach State begins the week by playing their final home game of the season, hosting Cal State Fullerton on Thursday, Feb. 21. Tipoff for that game is at 7 p.m. in the Walter Pyramid. Following that, the team will travel to Cal State Northridge to face the winless Matadors. The start time for that game has been changed to 2 p.m. due to a scheduling conflict with the CSUN men's Bracketbuster game.
Senior Spotlight
Thursday marks the final home game for Long Beach State's lone senior, Tyresha Calhoun. Calhoun leads the team in assists and steals while logging the most time on the court this year. Her 8.7 points per game are second on the team, and she remains the most accurate shooter from long range for the team, hitting 11 of her 26 attempts for a .423 average.
Week In Review
A tough week for the Beach last week, as the 49ers went on the road to UC Riverside and fell to the second-place Highlanders 67-39, having trouble getting baskets as UC Riverside did a good job containing Figueroa and Musina. After that loss, the 49ers dropped their final non-conference game to Cal State Bakersfield 65-62. Lauren Sims led a late charge for the Beach with three second-half three-pointers, but the rally eventually came up just short.
Last Time Around
Long Beach State lost a close game on the road at Fullerton, as Toni Thomas rebounded from a slow first half to score 19 points, and Ashley Richie led the Titans with 21 points in a 75-66 win that was closer than the score indicated. The 49ers hosted Cal State Northridge in their first meeting this year, as the 49ers had four players in double-figures while scoring a season-high 71 points against the Matadors. Karina Figueroa led the way with 18 points.
Scouting CS Fullerton
Post player Toni Thomas continues to lead both the Titans and the Big West in scoring, averaging 16.8 points per game. However, that has not translated to recent success for a team that was very hot. The Titans had won six of seven prior to last weeek, where they fell in overtime to Pacific before getting blown out at UC Davis, losing 82-55. Those losses evened Fullerton's record in Big West play to 6-6.
Long Beach State vs. the Titans
The loss earlier in the season doesn't really put a dent in the 49ers lead in the lengthy series between the two teams. Long Beach State has 60 wins while Cal State Fullerton has just 31 over the course of the series. Long Beach State has also won more in the past ten, but the Titans have won three of the last four games.
Scouting Cal State Northridge
A difficult year for Cal State Northridge continues to pile up, as the Matadors remain one of just two winless teams in Division I. Among the bright spots for Cal State Northridge has been the play of Whitney Ligon, who averages 12.7 points per game. Katie Holloway also adds 11.9 points per game, and led the team in the first meeting between the Matadors and Long Beach State.
Long Beach State vs. the Matadors
The 49ers had lost three straight games to Cal State Northridge, but their 71-56 win earlier this year gives the 49ers a 27-10 lead in the all-time series. The two teams played many times in the sixties and seventies before taking an extended break of nearly 20 years buefore resuming the series in 1995. The Matadors began playing the 49ers twice a year in 2002, and the series has been fairly even in that time, with Long Beach State taking 8 wins to Northridge's 5.
Back In Black
For the first time all season, the 49ers had a full roster cleared from injuries for their Saturday contest. Lynea Williams was cleared to play after an 8-game absence from the team. The 49ers have had 52 player games lost due to various injuries to eight players. Valeryia Musina has the dubious distinction of missing the most time, a total of 15 games.
