TUCSON, Ariz. -- The Long Beach State men's golf team opened the spring season in their first tournament of 2008, but not as planned. After just one round completed at the Ping Intercollegiate in Tucson, the 49ers find themselves in 15th place as they finished with a score of 302. Tennessee leads the field of 16 teams as they finished 12-under-par 272, followed by East Tennessee State at 274.
Sophomore Michael Drake is the top 49er as he finished tied for 22nd with an even-71, followed by Karl Katnik (73) tied for 36th and big brother JJ Katnik (78) tied for 72nd. Senior Jeremy Keller playing in his first tournament in over a year, finished in 85th, 15-over-par as he shot an 86 in the opening round. Simon Doherty of East Tennessee State sits on top of the leader board with a six-under 65.
"We played pretty well through most of the first round," said 49er Head Coach Bob Livingstone. "I think we were in 6th place with 4 holes to go, but had a few really bad holes late in the round, and that just kind of carried over into the second round. This is a very unforgiving course and shots that are a little bit off can quickly lead to double and triple bogeys."
Second and third rounds will be played on Tuesday at the Arizona National Golf Club.
