Long Beach, Calif. - On a night set aside to honor Long Beach State's 1998 National Championship team, the current squad looked like the champs putting together a 25-15, 25-17, 25-15 win over UC Davis in the Walter Pyramid.
Quincy Verdin hit .500, leading the team with 13 kills and Caitlin Ledoux added 10 on .444 hitting as Long Beach State was never threatened in a convincing win. Hitting .382, posting 17 more digs than the Aggies and out-blocking UC Davis, the 49ers put together one of their most complete matches of the year.
Long Beach State's 1998 National Championship team was reunited in honor of the 10th anniversary of their undefeated title run, with Olympic Medalists Misty May-Treanor and Tayyiba Haneef-Park in attendance along with 10 other members of the championship team.
Long Beach State trailed early in all three sets, but with their latest lead change coming at 5-4, the 49ers would cruise to victory in each set, including hitting .524 as a team in the third. Along with Verdin and Ledoux, Naomi Washington and Ashley Lee both hit over .400. Defensively, Herzog added four blocks, and Iris Murray led the team with 11 digs.
Long Beach State gets a rematch with one of just two teams to beat the 49ers in conference play, as Pacific comes to town. That match begins at 7 p.m. Saturday in the Walter Pyramid.
