LONG BEACH – Senior Paul Lotman pounded down 16 kills and Dan Alexander added 11 kills and 10 block assists to lead the third-ranked Long Beach State men's volleyball team to a resounding 30-21, 32-30, 30-21 win over fifth-ranked Pepperdine on Wednesday evening at the Walter Pyramid. The 49ers stay unbeaten at 7-0 overall and 5-0 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF). Pepperdine fell to 4-3 overall and 4-3 in MPSF play.

Long Beach recorded 17.5 team blocks in the match, as Alexander had a season-high 10 blocks. Opposite Dean Bittner added seven blocks and seven kills , Lotman had six blocks while Fletcher Anderson and Mike Klipsch both had four. The 49ers limited the Waves to a season-low -.065 hitting percentage in the match as Pepperdine finished with 37 hitting errors compared to just 30 kills.

J.D. Schleppenbach led the way for the Waves with 11 kills and Cory Riecks added 10. Setter Jonathan Winder finished with 25 assists, three aces and three digs.

The 49ers hit just .184 for the match, but won the match at the net. Long Beach also had seven service aces, four by Lotman.

In game one the 49ers broke a 10-10 tie with an 8-2 run to take an 18-12 advantage. The 49ers won the game 30-21 as Bittner and Alexander both had five kills. Long Beach hit .308 (13-5-26) in the game and limited the Waves to a -.034 (11-12-29) percentage.

Game two was the best of the evening. Trailing 28-25, the 49ers rallied to tie the game at 28-28 after two Lotman kills and a Klipsch service ace. From there the 49ers fought off two game points by the Waves (29-28, 30-29), before scoring the final three points of the game to secure the 32-30 win. An Alexander kill tied the game at 30-30, before Alexander and Bittner teamed up for a block to give The Beach the lead. Game point came on a Wave hitting error. The 49ers had 9.5 team blocks in game two alone, including six block assists by Alexander. Lotman recorded 10 kills in the game.

The 49ers will next be in action on Friday, February 1 when they host No. 11 ranked USC at 7 pm in the Walter Pyramid.
