LONG BEACH – The third-ranked Long Beach State men's volleyball team remained perfect in 2008 as they dispatched of 11th-ranked USC 30-25, 32-30, 30-23 on Friday evening in front of a season-high crowd of 1,248 at the Walter Pyramid. The 49ers improved to 8-0 overall and remain in first place in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) with a 6-0 mark. USC fell to 4-6 and 3-4 in league action.

Senior Paul Lotman led the 49ers with 18 kills and three aces, while Dean Bittner added 13 kills and a team-high five digs. Dan Alexander added six kills and seven block assists and setter Mike Klipsch dished out 40 assists and had four blocks. The 49ers hit .289 for the match, including a sizzling .469 (18-3-32) in game three.

Lotman's three aces give him 92 in his career and move him past Jim Polster into third place on the 49er career chart. His 18 kills moved him up one spot on the 49er career chart to No. 17, passing Robert Kutsch. Lotman currently has 971 career kills in his four-year career at Long Beach State.

USC was led by Andrew Vernon's nine kills and five block assists. Hunter Current added seven kills as did Sean Dennis off the bench. USC hit .116 (36-26-86) in the match and had 14 service aces on the evening.

Long Beach won game one 30-25 as they limited the Trojans to a .077 (11-9-26) hitting percentage. Bittner led the attack with six kills and Lotman added five. Game two proved to be the most exciting. The 49ers led 29-24, but saw a USC rally tie the score at 29-29. Tied at 30-30, the 49ers broke through on a service error by Tito Goldstein and a block by Bittner and Alexander on the Trojans Tyler Stevens, closing out the 32-30 victory. In the third game the 49ers led 17-16, but used a 5-0 run to grab a 22-16 lead and were never threatened from there. Lotman recorded nine of his match-high 18 kills in game three.

The 49ers are next in action on Friday, February 8 when they host UC San Diego at 7 pm in the Walter Pyramid.
