49ers Complete First Tournament of Spring Season

TUCSON, Ariz. -- The Long Beach State men's golf team completed their first tournament of the spring season as they finished in 16th place at the Ping Intercollegiate. Second and third rounds were played on Tuesday at the Arizona National Golf Club as second round action was postponed due to darkness. Earlier in the day, the 49ers finished the second round with a score of 320 and came back in the final round to improve their score to a 304. Tennessee was the overall winner as they finished three shots ahead of second place finisher UNLV. The Volunteers completed the tournament 20-under-par 832.
Sophomore Michael Drake was the top 49er as he finished 13-over-par 226, tied for 64th. Karl Katnik (234), Eric Pitcaithley (236) and JJ Katnik (239) finished in 79th, 80th and 81st. Senior Jeremy Keller completed the touranment in 84th. Kevin Chappell of UCLA was the individual winner as he finished 15-under-par 198.
"We are trying to play the toughest schedule we can get, and this is one of the strongest tournaments of the entire spring," said 49er Head Coach Bob Livingstone. "We made some mistakes and when you do that against great teams, you are going to struggle. We got some rust off after the winter break and have plenty of time to work some things out before Hawai'i"
The 49ers are next in action on Feb. 20-22 as they travel across the Pacific Ocean as they take part in the John A. Burns Intercollegiate in Honolulu, Hawai'i..
