RIVERSIDE -- Larry Cunningham knocked down free throws with 12.2 seconds left to seal a 70-66 win for UC Riverside over Long Beach State on Saturday evening at the UCR Student Events Center. Cunningham finished with 20 points for the Highlanders who improve to 4-12 overall and 1-4 in the Big West. Donovan Morris led Long Beach State (4-12, 1-4) with 19 points.
The 49ers held a 62-55 lead with 4:21 remaining after an Arturas Lazdauskas lay-up. But UCR would use a 12-3 run to take a 67-65 lead with 47.5 left after a three-point play by Sean Cunningham. Cunningham then hit one of two charity tosses at 21.8 to give UCR a 68-65 lead. A Darnell Porter free throw at 14.6 cut the deficit to 68-66 before Larry Cunningham's free throws at the end sealed the victory.
Lazdauskas had a career-high 10 points for the 49ers and Cornel Williams added 12. Artis Gant played his first game since December 5, and had seven points and four assists in 24 minutes of action. Long Beach shot .457 (21-46) from the field, but were 3-14 from three-point range. The 49ers had a season-low eight turnovers in the contest and were out-rebounded 32-to-25. Porter led LBSU with five boards. Long Beach was 21-30 at the free throw line while UCR knocked down 21-of-29 charity tosses.
Aaron Scott added 16 points and 10 rebounds for the Highlanders and Sean Cunningham added 13. UCR shot .489 (23-47) from the field and had just 11 turnovers.
In the opening half UCR took a 34-33 lead into the lockerroom after a see-saw affair. There were 11 lead changes in the opening stanza, and five ties, but Cunningham scored the Highlanders final seven points of the stanza giving UCR the one-point lead. Morris led Long Beach with eight points in the half as the 49ers shot .444 (12-27) from the field. Long Beach had just four first half turnovers while forcing seven UCR miscues. The 49ers led 16-10 with 12:43 remaining, but saw the Highlanders go on an 11-4 run over the next four-plus minutes to take a 21-20 lead at 8:06. Lazdauskas' bucket at 0:42 gave the 49ers a 33-32 lead, but Cunningham scored the final two points of the half knocked down two free throws with 26.9 seconds left.
Long Beach will be home on Wednesday, January 23 when they host Cal State Bakersfield at 7 pm at the Walter Pyramid.
