49ers Scorch Mean Green 5-0
NORMAN, Okla.— Kristen Kiefer and Kim Silos mirrored their performances on Sunday, as Silos scored twice on two Kiefer assists to give Long Beach State (6-3-0) a 5-0 victory over North Texas (6-2-0) on the second day of the Oklahoma Sooner Classic. The 49ers were named champions of the tournament, following a 5-1 victory and two Kiefer goals over Middle Tennessee on Friday. Oklahoma and Middle Tennessee tied 0-0 in the second match on Sunday, as Silos was named the tournament's Offensive MVP, while Kiefer, Hayley Bolt, Mariko Strickland and Sara Baca were named all-tournament for the 49ers. The team's fourth win in a row, saw Silos also set up the team's fourth goal off a corner kick and ensuing goal by Mariko Strickland at 50:40 and directly passed to Hayley Bolt's head to make it 5-0 at 52:19. Kiefer and Silos combined on two of the three first half goals. The 49ers dominated the first half, controlling the ball for the entire half and outshooting the Mean Green 11-to-4 and leading 3-0 after the first 45 minutes. The 49ers outshot NTU 25-to-9 for the contest. After taking five shots over the first 11 minutes, Kiefer found Silos at 11:56 to make it 1-0. Kiefer fought through traffic deep in the box, and passed it left to an open. Silos, who scored from eight yards out. Kiefer found Silos again 14 minutes later, as Kiefer streaked down the left side and passed to Silos in the center of the box, who then scored again at 25:58 to make it 2-0. Grace Shevlin scored on her own corner kick make it 3-0, at 39:15. The 49ers, who had scored just five or more goals just four times previously in their history, hit the five-goal mark for the third time this season. The 49ers return home next weekend to host No. 18-ranked USC on Friday at 4 p.m. and Wyoming on Sunday.
