Former Dirtbag Muniz Called up to Majors NEW YORK—Former Long Beach State Dirtbag Carlos Muniz, a 13th round pick of the New York Mets in 2003, was called up by the parent club following a Triple-A stint with the New Orleans Zephyrs. Muniz, who pitched three games in Triple-A and then in the Pacific Coast League playoffs along with another former Dirtbag, Jason Vargas, pitched most of the season in Double-A, where he was 2-4 with 23 saves and a 2.45 ERA in 44 appearances. Opponents batted just .197 against the former Dirtbag closer. Muniz was third in the Eastern League in saves. He did not allow a run in 5.2 innings and three relief appearances during the regular season in Triple-A. During his five-year minor league career, Muniz compiled 91 saves over 188 relief appearances. Prior to this year, he had a 17-10 record and 3.73 ERA over four seasons, all in Single-A with the Mets. Muniz spent the 2002 and 2003 seasons with the Dirtbags, going 3-3 with a 2.41 ERA over 49 appearances. He was the team’s setup man in 2002, compiling a 1.52 ERA over 23 appearances, before relieving 26 times in 2003, posting 11 saves and a 3.14 ERA for the Super Regional Dirtbags. Muniz is the 10th Dirtbag in the Majors this season and 29th all-time
in program history. Other notable alums include: former American League
