Bullock and Silos Have Utes Singing the Blues
LONG BEACH-- Freshman Lindsay Bullock connected on a Kim Silos corner kick in the fourth minute of overtime to lead No. 25-ranked Long Beach State (2-0-0) to a 1-0 victory over visiting Utah (1-1-0) on a warm and muggy Sunday morning. Bullock's header off of a Ute defender at 93:29, was about seven minutes after the start of the annual Long Beach Blues Festival, which forced a 9 a.m. start to the match. Though the shot total ended in the Utes favor, 15-to-8, the scoring opportunities for both sides were minimal. The 49ers missed two opportunities in the opening minutes of the second half as a breakaway was missed after being setup by Mariko Strickland in the 51st minute. Six minutes later, freshman Nikki Myers forced Ute goalkeeper Lynzee Lee out of the box, but could not convert on a pass to the inside lane. Kim Silos had a chance to give the 49ers the lead in the 74th minute but her shot from just outside the penalty circle bounced off the top of the crossbar and out to keep the game scoreless. Utah had their own opportunities midway through the second half. In the 70th minute, following a foul, Adele Letro's shot in front of the net was kicked out by LBSU defender Julie Megorden. In the 79th minute Erin Dalley's shot sailed high over the net from 25 yards out. The 49ers head out on Monday for two contests against top-25 foes, traveling to No. 22-ranked Wake Forest on Wednesday and to No. 19-ranked Clemson on Friday. |
