BAKERSFIELD -- Newcomers Kristen Kiefer scored a goal and an assist, while Mariko Strickland had two first half assists as No. 25-ranked Long Beach State (1-0) won their season opener at CS Bakersfield 5-0 on a warm and muggy Friday evening. Nikki Myers added two second half goals.

In a matter of two minutes the 49ers went up 2-0 on assists by Strickland. Strickland brought it up the far side and sent it to Kim Silos, before sending it ahead to Kiefer to give the 49ers a 1-0 lead at 27:05. At 29:26, Strickland connected again, this time finding Hayley Bolt, with a diving header, to double the score for LBSU.

Myers then scored 10 minutes into the second half, taking a pass from Kiefer to give LBSU a 3-0 advantage. Myers took it up the middle in the 61st minute to make it 4-0. Janet Mendez then took it herself two minutes later deep in the box to make it 5-0.

The Roadrunners did not have a shot until the 60th minute, as The Beach ended up outshooting CSUB 10-to-3. The speedy 49ers overcame five offside calls over the first 25 minutes and never drew another flag the rest of the way.

The 49ers bring out the griddle and the pancakes on Sunday when they host their home opener at George Allen Field starting at 9 a.m.
