49ers Race into National Championships; Gray Spears
a Spot as Well EUGENE, OR-- The women's 4x100-meter relay team ran a school-record 44.86, Brent Gray won the 200-meter dash and finished second in 100-meter race, and Tyson Gray was third in the javelin, to give Long Beach State four more particpants in the NCAA Championships in Sacramento starting on June 6. The relay team of Jasmine Winfield, Jessica Branker, Magnolia Howell and Patrice White, finished second to give the 49ers their first women's relay team at a national championship in school-history. Gray won the 200-meter race with a time of 20.74, four-tenths off his school-record, and finished second in the 100-meter race with a time of 10.40. Gray is the first 49er sprinter to reach Nationals since 1999. Gray's mark of 218' in the javelin was his second-straight personal-best, as he has improved by 22 feet over the last two weeks. Kim Heinz earned an automatic bid yesterday with a fourth place finish in the javelin, while Alex Shaw (javelin) and Robert Jennings (discus) from yesterday and Jill Reynolds (pole vault) and Jennifer Onyeagbako (discus), today await possible at-large bids. The men's team finished tied with California for ninth place with 27 points, while the women were tied for 13th (18 points) with Big West Champion, CS Northridge. |
