Trio Have a Good Friday at Big West Challenge

49er Women Second, Men Third at Big West Challenge GOLETA, CA-- The Long Beach State women finished five points out of first place and the men finished two points out of third at the 15th running of the Big West Challenge on Friday. The women produced seven individual champions and had an additional four runners-up, while the men had two men win four events and had five runners-up. Host UC Santa Barbara won the women's side with 210 points, and the men won with 189 points. The LBSU women (205), CS Fullerton (143) and UC Irvine (118) followed, while on the men's side, CS Fullerton were second (170), followed by LBSU (168) and UC Irvine (146). Jessica Branker won the 100 and 200 meter races and was a part of the winning 4x400-meter relay team, while Brent Gray won the 100 and 200 races. Alex Goldberg finished second to Gray in the 200, and was also second in the 400-meter race. It was a good Friday for Ezra Kwong, who won the shot put with a regional qualifying mark, and also won the discus. "I feel both the men's and women's team were both capable of better meets than what they showed today," said Head Coach Andy Sythe. "We have the ability for bigger and better things, but will have to work hard over the next month and a half to do so." The javelin throw produced two regional marks, as Kim Heinz won it and Alex Shaw was a runner up. Jennifer Onyeagbako won the discus with regional qualifier of 171'1". Jill Reynolds also had a regional mark, winning the pole vault at 12'5.5". |
