Cal Poly Wins Fourth in a Row at The Mid
LONG BEACH, CA-- Cal Poly (9-12, 4-4 Big West) won its fourth in a row, pulling away midway through the second half to defeat host Long Beach State (5-19, 2-8 Big West) 67-56. The Mustangs are now 5-2 since beating The Beach back on January 6. The 19 losses ties a school-record for LBSU. The 49ers, who took a halftime lead for the first time in a month, and had someone other than Karina Figueroa lead in scoring at the half for the first time in five weeks, could not overcome a 13-2 run by the Mustangs midway through the second half. Prior to that point, LBSU led for the entire first half and trailed by a bucket or less for the first eight minutes of the second half. Figueroa led the 49ers with 17 points, while Madison Pagani had a career-high 11 points and 11 rebounds for LBSU. Toni Newman had 17 points and Megan Harrison added 11 points. Cal Poly shot 38 percent for the contest, including 49 percent in the second half. At one point, the 49ers missed 13 of their first 16 shots to start the second half to finish with a 36 percentage from the field. A Toni Newman jumper on the baseline, forced a timeout by LBSU at 9:59 as the basket capped an 8-2 run and made it 47-40. A Kaysen Brennan jumper broke a 39-39 tie, and at that point, was their largest lead of the game. Two free throws by Jessica Eggleston made it 45-40 with 10:27 left. The 49ers led from wire to wire in the first half, taking a 28-24 lead at the intermission. In an defensive stahlwart, Cal Poly shot 27 percent and LBSU shot 37 percent. A Madison Pagani layup at 4:37 gave the 49ers a 21-17 lead. A Megan Harrison three-pointer tied it at 17-17 with 9:26 left, after the 49ers led for the first 10 and a half minutes. The 49ers four-game homestand continues on Saturday against UC Santa Barbara with a mid-evening affair at 5 p.m. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||
