49ers Let One Fall Through Their Fingertips
STOCKTON, CA-- Jake Kelly hit a three-pointer with 55 seconds left, as host Pacific (8-15, 2-7 Big West) held on to defeat visiting Long Beach State (5-18, 2-7 Big West) 77-72 after the 49ers led by as many as four points with two minutes remaining. Following Kelly's three off a UOP timeout, Karina Figueroa missed a three-pointer on the next possession. The 49ers were forced to foul and Kelsey Lavender converted two free throws to give UOP a 75-72 lead with 20 seconds left. The 49ers then missed two more shots before two more free throws by Jerise Freeman iced the game with one second left. Kaiti O'Brien fouled out with a season-high 14 points and eight rebounds to lead four 49ers in double figures. Karina Figueroa added 15 points as the 49ers shot 39 percent for the contest. Brett Timmons added 10 points and a career-high nine rebounds on 4-of-6 shooting in the team's most balanced attack in two months. Pacific, who shot 42 percent for the game, were led by 21 points from Jake Kelly and 15 points and 12 rebounds for Freeman. The 49ers had the win in their fingertips, as Tyresha Calhoun's three-point play put LBSU up 72-68 with 2:12 remaining. Calhoun finished with 13 points. O'Brien gave the 49ers a 67-64 lead with 4:17 left, capping an 11-1 run by The Beach. A 7-0 run by the Tigers snapped a 56-56 tie and gave UOP a 63-56 lead off a Whitney Price jumper at 8:22. LBSU jumped right back to lead 65-64 with 6:21 left as the 49ers went on their own 9-1 run to lead late in the contest. The 49ers trailed 34-33 at the half, as LBSU fought back from a 20-12 defict midway through the half, using a 13-7 run to close to within 27-25 on a Brett Timmons jumper with 4:53 left.
