49ers Headed to Outdoors; Indoor Recap

Outdoor Season Begins at UCLA LONG BEACH, CA-- Long Beach State track and field will send primarily its thowers and jumpers to the first oudoor meet of the season, at UCLA on Saturday. At the meet in Westwood, Several local teams are set to compete along with Long Beach State and the host Bruins, Cal Poly , CS Fullerton, CS Bakersfield, CS San Marcos, LMU, Pepperdine and CS Los Angeles. The hammer throw begins at 9 a.m. kicks off the meet, while most of the track events begin at noon. The 49ers are coming off eighth (men) and ninth (women) place showings at the MPSF Championships last weekend, as a handful of athletes await to see if they have made the NCAA Indoor Championships in Fayetteville, AR on March 9 and 10. Likely headed to the national meet are Jimmy Grabow, who has two top-30 times in the distances, and Ronald Carter, who ranks third nationally in the indoor triple jump and was an All-American last outdoor season. Grabow, who ranks fifth nationally in the 5000-meter and 28th nationally in the 3000-meter, with school records in both events, looks to become the first male All-American LBSU distance runner in school-history. Brent Gray, who set school-records in both the 60 and 200-meter races, ranks 23rd nationally in the 200-meter, while Chirs Richardson is 25th in the heptathlon. Both have outside chances of getting in. Three other athletes, Ezra Kwong (shot put), Rob Jennigns (weight throw) and Jill Reynolds (pole vault) finished the season ranked in the top-50. Grabow, Carter, Gray and Richardson are among the LBSU athletes who set nine school records this past indoor season. Alex Freitas and Mario Cobian set school records in the mile, Ludi Valdez set the standard in the 5000-meter and the team of Freitas, Grabow, Charles Lewis and Cobian set the Distance Medley Relay record. All told, this distance program has set eight of the 10 indoor school records. |
