49ers Knock Off Titans
LONG BEACH, CA-- Long Beach State (6-21, 2-10) overcame an 11-point first half deficit to defeat visiting Cal State Fullerton (13-13, 7-5), 73-59, at the Walter Pyramid in a Big West Conference match up Saturday afternoon. Karina Figueroa matched her career high as she led The Beach with 29 points and seven rebounds. Brett Timmons added 10 points and seven rebounds and Tyresha Calhoun contributed with four assists. The Beach shot 42 percent from the field (27-64) and forced 22 turnovers as the Titans shot 37 percent (23-62). Dayana Frias led Fullerton with 18 points and Toni Thomas led with 10 rebounds and 13 points . Charlee Underwood scored 11 points for CSUF as well. Long Beach State opened the half with a 12-3 run in the first eight minutes to take a 45-39 advantage. Just when it looked like The Beach was going to pull away, the Titans came back on a Andrea Adams' layup at 11:30 to cut the score to 45-42. With 6:56 remaining in the game, Figueroa's three pointer (3-4) gave the 49ers 58-48 advantage. Fullerton came within five with a Frias' three pointer at the 3:20 mark, but the 49ers were able to pull away for good as Ally Wade hit a three pointer to give as the 49ers the last nine points. The Titans started the contest strong as they went on a 10-0 run before Figueroa scored the 49ers' first points on the board at the 16:19 mark. The Beach battled back with a Calhoun jumper at 7:15 to bring Long Beach within one. But, the Titans pulled away for the next three minutes as Underwood hit a three pointer, giving Fullerton a 31-24 advantage. The 49ers never gave up as the first half was coming to a close as LBSU's Lauren Sims' layup at 3:45 started a 7-0 run and The Beach was able to tie the score at 31 with Figueroa's two free throws with 21 seconds left as she led Long Beach with 12 points in the first half. Long Beach State will hit the road for their final two games of the season as they face UC Davis on Feb. 24 and UC Irvine on Mar. 3. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||
