49ers Fall at First Place CS Northridge
NORTHRIDGE, CA-- Though the final score would not indicate it, the 49ers were in control of the game for the first 10 minutes of the contest. Using a more spread out offense, they led first place CS Northridge (10-11, 6-2 Big West), until a five-mintue drought led to a Matador comeback and yet another loss for Long Beach State (5-17, 2-6 Big West), 74-60. Karina Figueroa led the 49ers with her fifth 20-point performance over the last six contests of 25 points, while Tyresha Calhoun added 12 points and seven rebounds. LBSU shot 35 percent for the contest, after opening the game by hitting six of their first 10 shots and leading 13-10 at the under-12 timeout. Four players scored in double figures for the Matadors, led by Ofa Tulikihihifo's 16 points and 14 points and 14 rebounds by Jamie McCaa. The Matadors led 38-24 at the half, thanks in part to a 15-2 run over a five minute stretch in the first half. CSUN shot 52 percent, compared to just a 38 percent clip for the 49ers. McCaa's bucket at 2:42, capped the run and turned a 17-17 tie into a 32-19 advantage. A Krisztina Fuleki three-pointer at 7:19 was a sign of things to come, as it gave CSUN a 22-17 advantage. The Matadors extended it further, to 26-17, at the four-minute mark as LBSU was held scoreless for a five minute stretch. Long Beach State had led for the first 10 minutes of the ballgame, before an 11-4 run by CSUN gave them a 15-13 lead.
