49ers Share Conference Title Following Victory
LONG BEACH—Long Beach State (13-6-0, 6-2-0 Big West) closed out the regular season with two straight wins, winning back-to-back Big West Conference titles after a 2-1 victory over UC Santa Barbara (6-10-4, 3-4-1 Big West) on Sunday afternoon. Kim Silos had a goal and assist to lead the 49ers, who out shot the Gauchos 19-to-11 and had posted a shutout until the final 40 seconds of the contest. LBSU will share the title with CS Fullerton but be the second seed at next weekend's Big West Tournament after losing to the Titans in the head-to-head meeting. Cal Poly, the third seed, who tied CS Northridge on Sunday 1-1, will play the 49ers, while CS Fullerton will host UC Irvine, the fourth seed. UCI ended their regular season with a 2-0 win over UC Riverside. Silos started the scoring 45 seconds into the second half, taking a pass from Sahar Haghdan and scoring from 30 yards out to make it 1-0. Haghdan then benefited from a Silos saved shot, in the 61st minute, scoring on the rebound after Kristen Kiefer sent it into the box. Over the first 25 minutes of the second half, LBSU outshot the Gauchos 9-to-3 to build a 2-0 advantage after an even first half saw the 49ers take six shots and UCSB, five. UCSB tallied their only score at 89:20, when Michelle Russell scored on a rebounded shot by Katrina Wright which was one of five saves by goalkeeper Breanna Truelove. UCSB's Sami Svrcek nearly cut the lead in half in the 63rd minute but Truelove made a save before the 49er defense cleared it out. Truelove made another save in the first half, after Kailyn Kugler's second opportunity over a 90 second stretch in the 15th minute was caught. Kugler had gone 1-v-1 with Truelove moments earlier, but missed a shot wide. Kiefer had her own opportunity to put the 49ers on the board in the 13th minute, taking two shots, the first being saved, one of six saves by goalkeeper Katie Wright. |
