49ers Go Cold in the Second Half

BOZEMAN, Mont. -- Casey Durham and Carlos Taylor keyed a second half comeback lifting Montana State to a 74-56 win over Long Beach State on Tuesday evening. The Bobcats (1-1) out-scored the 49ers (0-2) 42-19 in the second half to earn the victory. Donovan Morris led Long Beach State with 14 points.
"They turned up the heat a little bit in the second half," said 49er Head Coach Dan Monson. "We weren't great defensively in the first half, but we were good enough to win this game. To give up 42 points in the second half is very disappointing."
The Bobcats shot .630 (17-27) from the field in the second half, as Durham scored 11 of his team-high 19 points in the second stanza. Durham was 4-5 from three-point range as MSU was 8-20 (.400) overall from three-point range. Taylor added 16 points, Divaldo Mbunga 14 points and nine rebounds and Adrian Zamora chipped in 10 pints and a team-high 11 rebounds.
Overall, the Bobcats shot .547 (29-53) from the field and out-rebounded the 49ers 33-to-23, 12 of those 33 rebounds were on the offensive glass.
Brian Freeman added 10 points, seven rebounds and three assists for Long Beach State and Brandon Johnson and Artis Gant each scored nine points. The 49ers shot just .308 (8-26) from the field in the second half and.458 (22-48) overall. The 49ers had just 12 turnovers in the contest, as did the Bobcats.Montana State took its first lead of the game at 41-40 on a jumper by Mecklen Davis at 17:06. The Bobcats opened the half with a 9-3 run. A three-pointer by Brandon Johnson gave the 49ers a 43-41 lead, but MSU
responded with a 14-3 run over the next 6:11 to take a 55-46 lead at 10:27.
Long Beach began the game on fire from the field, jumping out to a 7-0 lead and hitting seven of its first 10 field goal attempts. The 49ers biggest lead of the half was 12 points after an 8-0 run gave Long Beach a 30-18 lead at the 5:15 mark. Morris tallied 13 points
in the half, helping stake the 49ers to a 37-32 halftime lead. Long Beach shot .636 (14-22) from the field and had just four first half turnovers. The Bobcats stayed close though thanks to hitting four three-pointers, two by Durham.
The 49ers return to the Walter Pyramid on Saturday, November 17 when they host Idaho State at 4 pm.
