Defense Shines in 1-0 Perfect First Weekend for the 49ers
DAVIS— Dana Farquhar scored in the 71st minute as Long Beach State (9-4-0, 2-0-0 Big West) completed a perfect first weekend by defeating host UC Davis (5-6-0, 1-2-0 Big West) 1-0 on Sunday afternoon. The 49ers out shot the Aggies 18-to-4 in the contest, but it was the team's new look defense, which shined on Sunday. Sara Baca along with newcomers, Cat Gray, Amanda Perry and Jenn Brooks, all started for the first time this season due to injuries, and allowed just one shot over the first 77 minutes as LBSU took a 1-0 lead late in the contest. Farquhar finally broke through at 70:06 when Kim Silos sent it deep into the box for Farqhar who caught a flat-footed goalkeeper, Sarah Peters, off balance and kicked it past her. Silos nearly found the net moments earlier on a feed from Hayley Bolt. The 49ers controlled much of the first half after a flat start by both teams. LBSU out shot the Aggies 6-to-1, with four on goal. Peters' fingertips saved a goal in the 33rd minute as a lob shot by Silos was saved out by the upper reaches of Pacific's goalkeeper. Peters made another save with 21 seconds left in the half, when Caroline Shevlin passed it ahead to Katelyn Quaresma, whose shot was then stopped just inside the box. Another unlucky break came in the 18th minute as Silos kicked it ahead to Dana Farquhar, but Farqhar missed a rolling shot to the left.. LBSU was playing without three starters, defender Grace Shevlin (ankle) and forward Kristen Kiefer (ankle), who both left Friday's match, and defender Julie Megorden (knee), who is out for the season. Shevlin and Kiefer will be re-evaluated this week. The 49ers have a quiet week next weekend, playing just once, at CS Northridge on Sunday at noon. |
