Quaresma Wins it for 49ers in 78th Minute
STOCKTON— Playing just minutes from her hometown, senior Katelyn Quaresma (Manteca) scored the game-winner in the 78th minute as part of a two-goal second half to propel Long Beach State (8-4-0, 1-0-0 Big West) to a 3-2 conference opening victory over host Pacific (5-4-2, 0-1-0 Big West) on Friday evening. The game, despite the two second half scores, also suffered two setbacks for the 49ers. Starting defender Grace Shevlin (ankle) was taken to the hospital for x-rays following a play in the first half, and Kristen Kiefer left the match late in the contest due to another ankle injury. Kiefer is day-to-day, Shevlin will receive an MRI earlier this week. The winning score was setup when Amanda Perry initiated the goal with a throw-in deep in Tiger territory that squirted it's way through five different players in the box before coming to rest with Quaresma. Quaresma recognized her opportunity and placed her shot past Jaime Souza. The 49ers tied the match in the 50th minute with the ball at the left corner of the 18, Kristen Kiefer and Sahar Haghdan executed a give The Tigers took a 2-1 lead right before half when Laura King found the net 45 seconds before the end of the first half. Pacific took advantage of a realigned 49er defense to make it 1-0 in the 29th minute. After starting defender Grace Shevlin left the game in the 25th minute (right leg), Van Dorn scored at 28:34. Following a 49er corner kick, the Tigers cleared it high to Bunny Dickson, who headed it ahead to Van Dorn, who took it about 15 yards before scoring past a diving Liz Ramos. Kim Silos, after missing her first career match on Sunday, came off the bench (ankle) in the 18th minute as LBSU quickly had an unlucky breakaway two minutes later. Kiefer took the first shot of the half in the 28th minute, that was caught by Souza. Ramos made a point-blank save in the 21st minute to save a potential score from Van Dorn. The 49ers travel to UC Davis on Sunday for another Big West matchup at noon. |
