LONG BEACH -- The Long Beach State men's golf team completed the 12th annual Del Walker Intercollegiate Classic in 8th place as the 49ers shot a five-over 857 (286-281-290) at the Virginia Country Club Friday afternoon. Colorado State won the team championship by one stroke over fellow Big West Conference member Pacific (284-275-283) as the Rams (276-284-281) shot an impressive 11-under par to finish with a 841. Saint Mary's, last year's co-champions with Arkansas, completed the tournament in third place as the Gaels (283-284-277) shot an eight-under 844.
On the individual side, Aaron Slonim came out as the top 49er as he finished tied for 20th with a one-over 214 (72-71-71). JJ Katnik was one stroke behind with a two-over par (74-71-70) as he finished all alone in 25th and younger brother Karl Katnik was right behind as he finished tied for 26th with a score of 216. Michael Drake finished tied for 38th and Ricky Montanez came in tied for 49th. Robeto Galletti claimed the individual title as he tied with Dawie Van Der Walt of Lamar in 2005, for the second best finish in tournament history with a nine-under 204. Chris Stroud of Lamar holds the record for the best finish in the 2003 Del Walker with an 11-under 202.
"We got off to a good start and got within four shots of the lead," said 49er Head Coach Bob Livingstone. "The wind came up in the back nine and had a couple of bad holes."
The 49ers complete their Fall schedule and will next be in action at the Ping Intercollegiate in Sabino Spring, Ariz. on Jan. 29-30.
