Coaches, Media Make Their Picks for Basketball Season

Selected For Preseason All-Big West IRVINE, Calif. – Junior guard Karina Figueroa was one of six women's basketball players named to the Big West Preseason Media All-Conference team as announced by the conference office at Big West Basketball Media Day today. Figueroa averaged 16.4 points per game and led the conference in scoring during league matches last season as a sophomore. The women's team, with Figueroa at the head was picked to finish fourth by the media, while the men's team was tabbed for seventh place with two first place votes from the assembled media in Irvine. Figueroa was joined on the six-member women's preseason all-conference team by two other juniors and three seniors. UC Riverside and UC Santa Babara both had two players selected, and Cal State Fullerton forward Toni Thomas rounded out the list for the women. For the women in the preseason polls, UC Riverside was picked to finish first again after taking the Big West regular season and conference tournament titles in both the media and coaches' polls. UC Santa Barbara was slated for second with a first place vote in both polls as well. Cal Poly was third in the media poll, closely followed in a tie for fourth place with Long Beach State and UC Davis. Cal State Fullerton, Cal State Northridge, UC Irvine and Pacific rounded out the remainder of the media poll. From the coaches, conference newcomer UC Davis was picked third, followed by Cal Poly and Long Beaech State. Cal State Fullerton was sixth, Pacific was seventh and Cal State Northridge and UC Irvine were deadlocked at the bottom. For the men, UC Santa Barbara was picked to win the conference in both the media and coaches poll. Among the media, Long Beach State received two first-place votes, but was ultimately picked the finish seventh. The coaches' had the 49ers in eighth, beating out UC Riverside who was last in both polls. The 2007-08 basketball season begins just around the corner. The women's team holds their first exhibition on Halloween night against Love & Basketball on Wednesday at seven, and the first men's exhibition is scheduled for Saturday, November 3 at 7 p.m. against San Francisco State. Tickets are available for both games.
